Software Updates

While all users can view the installed software, check for updates, and download updates, only administrators can perform software updates. Updating the software makes sure that your system has the latest features and fixes. Software updates are bundled into a digital package, which can include the following assets:

• System suite installer (SSI):
– NovaSeq X Series Control Software
– NovaSeq X Series recipes
– Universal Copy Service
– Real-Time Analysis
– Illumina Run Manager
• Consumables package
• OS patches
• DRAGEN
• DRAGEN applications
• Genome files

If the system has internet access, it can check for software updates automatically or on request. If the system does not have internet access, manually download installers to perform the software update.

If your system uses NovaSeq X Series Control Software v1.3 or earlier, contact your Illumina representative to perform software updates. Check the Illumina Product Security Portal for available OS patches.

1. Make sure that the following activities are not in progress:
• Sequencing run
• Secondary analysis
• File transfer
• DRAGEN installation
• DRAGEN license installation
• DRAGEN self-test
2. Select the instrument icon to open the global navigation menu.
3. Select Settings, and then select Software update.

4. Depending on your system configuration, review available updates:
• If the system is configured to check for software updates automatically, the number of available updates displays on page load.
• If the system is not configured to check for software updates automatically, select Check for updates.
5. Select View updates.
6. Select the checkbox for any update that you want to install, including software, applications, genomes, or reference files.

To avoid disk space errors during installation, only select the genomes that are relevant to your DRAGEN applications and workflows. Refer to the DRAGEN on NovaSeq X Series release notes that are available on the NovaSeq X Series support page.

7. Select Next.

A list of selected updates displays for review.

8. [Optional] Download the updates and complete the installation later as follows.
a. Select the Download only checkbox.

The download option is not available for genomes due to size constraints.

b. Select Download.
c. After the download completes, return to the Software update screen.
d. Select View downloads.

The downloaded updates are available for review, and you can proceed with installation.

9. Select Install.

A progress bar displays the approximate time remaining.

10. Select Restart software to complete the update.
1. If the instrument does not have internet access, download the installer (*.ipb2) from the appropriate location:
• For digital package installers, download from the NovaSeq X Series support site page.
• For installers that only contain OS patch files, download from the Illumina Product Security Portal.

If the file format for the installer is IRES or IAPP, refer to the instructions for Install or Uninstall DRAGEN Versions or Manage DRAGEN Applications, respectively.

2. Save the installer locally or to a network drive.
3. Make sure that the following activities are not in progress:
• Sequencing run
• Secondary analysis
• File transfer
• DRAGEN installation
• DRAGEN license installation
• DRAGEN self-test
4. Select the instrument icon to open the global navigation menu.
5. Select Settings, and then select Software update.

6. Select Select folder... to browse for software updates.
7. Navigate to your installer file, and then select Select.

The system checks for updates in that folder location and displays the number of available updates.

8. Select View updates.
9. Select the checkbox for any update that you want to install, including software, applications, genomes, or reference files.

To avoid disk space errors during installation, only select the genomes that are relevant to your DRAGEN applications and workflows. Refer to the DRAGEN on NovaSeq X Series release notes that are available on the NovaSeq X Series support page.

10. Select Next.

11. [Optional] Download the updates and complete the installation later as follows.
a. Select the Download only checkbox.

The download option is not available for genomes due to size constraints.

b. Select Download.
c. After the download completes, return to the Software update screen.
d. Select View downloads.

The downloaded updates are available for review, and you can proceed with installation.

12. Select Install.

A progress bar displays the approximate time remaining.

13. Select Restart software to complete the update.

Use the following instructions to uninstall software or resources like genomes and reference files.

1. Select the instrument icon to open the global navigation menu.
2. Select Settings, and then select Software update.

3. Select Uninstall.
4. Select the checkbox for any DRAGEN components to uninstall.
5. Select Next.
6. Select the checkbox for any genomes to uninstall.
7. Select Next.
8. Select the checkbox for any reference files to uninstall.
9. Select Next.

10. Select Uninstall.

11. Select Close.
