Network and Computer Security

The following sections provide guidelines for maintaining network and computer security. For configuration recommendations, refer to Operating System Configuration.

Illumina Security

It is strongly recommended that you review Illumina’s Security Best Practices at Illumina Security and Networking to keep your instrument secure. These best practices include, for example, enabling firewalls and using appropriate account settings.

Control Computer Security

The control computer combines Windows Software Restriction Policies (SRP) and user-supplied antivirus software for enhanced security. SRP increases the reliability, integrity, and manageability of computers in a domain. By restricting configurations, only identified applications can run.

If necessary, turn off or reconfigure SRP. For more information, refer to Illumina Instrument Control Computer Security and Networking.

Antivirus Software

An antivirus software of your choice is highly recommended to protect the instrument control computer against viruses. You will need to turn off Windows Software Restriction Policies (SRP) temporarily while you install the antivirus software.

For information on configuring antivirus software and SRP, refer to Illumina Instrument Control Computer Security and Networking.

Appropriate Use

The instrument control computer is designed to operate Illumina sequencing systems. For quality and security reasons, do not use it as a general-purpose computer. Web browsing, checking email, reviewing documents, and other unnecessary activity can degrade performance and cause data loss.
